ARRILERT never needs your location history to help you. If a decision puzzled you, you can attach that journey's Evidence Ledger export: it lists decisions, not map positions.
ARRILERT is not an emergency service. If you are in danger, contact the staff on board or call your local emergency number (112 in Europe).
Try the Rehearsal Lab
The Rehearsal Lab plays eight fictional journeys on ARRILERT's real decision engine, with a simulated clock. You don't need to travel, sign in or be online.
- Open ARRILERT. On first launch, tap Next twice, then Try a Journey — Demo. Later, it's on the home screen.
- Choose a scenario. Every rehearsal screen carries the banner REHEARSAL · NOT A REAL TRIP.
- Tap ▶︎ to play at 15× speed, or Next decision to jump to the next moment ARRILERT decides something.
- Answer as you would on a real trip — I'm ready, Still on board, This is my route — and tap Why? or open the Evidence Ledger to see the reasons.
Rehearsal notices appear inside the app, labelled DEMO; the Rehearsal Lab never sends a real notification. Its network, Port Meridian, is fictional and placed over open ocean so it can't be mistaken for a real place. Rehearsals are never saved.
| Scenario | What it shows |
|---|---|
| 1. Smooth urban ride | Right line, right direction, 6-minute Exit Contract: prepare, ready, next stop, then you confirm your exit. |
| 2. Wrong-direction train | RouteProof flags “possible wrong direction” only after repeated evidence. Try Why? and This is my route. |
| 3. Fork / branch mismatch | Shared track first, where the branch can't be told apart yet, then the train follows the other branch. |
| 4. Metro tunnel | Getting ready before a known tunnel, admitting uncertainty underground, then catching up. |
| 5. Express skips your stop | A warning that the service may not stop at your destination, then help to recover. |
| 6. Missed stop, still on board | The probable overshoot, the safety guidance and the Recovery Navigator. |
| 7. Notifications off + Focus | How ARRILERT works when notifications are off: notices shown in the app only, clearly labelled, with no pretend sounds. |
| 8. Poor GPS beside a parallel road | RouteProof answers “cannot determine” rather than guessing which vehicle you're on. |
Plan a real journey
- On the home screen, tap Plan a journey. Search for a station, stop or address, or tap the map to drop a pin. Search needs a data connection; dropping a pin doesn't.
- Choose how ARRILERT follows the route:
- Destination only — distance and time to your destination. RouteProof can't check your direction without route evidence.
- Your checkpoints — you mark a few points along your usual route. RouteProof then checks your direction and large deviations, with lower confidence than full route data, and without counting stops.
- Set your Exit Contract: how many minutes you need to get ready, an uncertainty margin, and your own steps.
- Tap Start journey. ARRILERT asks for location access (While Using the App) and for notifications at this point, and explains why.
- Check the destination display in the vehicle. Monitoring starts when you confirm, or once you are moving.
- When you've left the vehicle, tap I got off. You can also tap End journey at any time; a journey stops on its own after 6 hours.
Location is used only while a journey you started is running — also with the screen locked, which iOS shows with the location indicator — and stops when the journey ends.
Alert Readiness Check
Open it from the home screen (Alert Readiness Check) or from Settings & privacy → Permissions. It shows what iOS reports to ARRILERT, and says plainly what iOS doesn't:
- Notifications: whether they're allowed, and the Time Sensitive, Sound, banner and Lock Screen settings.
- Location: the permission and whether Precise Location is on.
- What ARRILERT can't see: whether a Focus or the Silent switch is on. It also shows whether headphones are connected, Low Power Mode and Background App Refresh.
Test your arrival notice
- Tap Send a test notice in 5 seconds, then lock your iPhone as you would on a journey.
- When the notice appears, tap I noticed it.
- Back in the app, read the result: Accepted by iOS → Reported delivered by iOS → You confirmed you noticed it.
“Delivered” means iOS listed the notice — not that anyone heard it. iOS never tells apps whether a sound played. A test you noticed shows that notices can reach you with today's settings; it doesn't guarantee future notices, while the iPhone is locked, in a Focus, or if iOS stops ARRILERT.
Helping notices reach you
- Allow notifications for ARRILERT, with Sound on: iOS Settings → Notifications → ARRILERT. With the Standard and Assertive notice levels, arrival notices are Time Sensitive: keep Time Sensitive Notifications on.
- If you use a Focus, allow ARRILERT, or Time Sensitive notifications, in that Focus.
- The Silent switch also silences Time Sensitive notices. ARRILERT can't see whether it is on.
- With headphones connected, the notification sound may play only in your headphones.
- Don't force-quit ARRILERT during a journey: it can't keep working afterwards. Reminders already scheduled may still appear, but without new location data.
- Keep Precise Location on for ARRILERT. With an approximate location, RouteProof is more likely to answer “cannot determine”.
- Underground, GPS can disappear. ARRILERT then says its estimate is uncertain instead of guessing — check station signs and announcements.
What ARRILERT can and can't do
The same list is in the app: Settings & privacy → What ARRILERT can and can't do.
ARRILERT does
- Check whether your recent movement matches the route and direction you chose (RouteProof), and say when it can't tell.
- Tell you when to get ready based on your own preparation time, the estimate and its uncertainty.
- Ask you to confirm your exit, and help you recover if you may have missed your stop.
- Explain every decision in the Evidence Ledger.
ARRILERT does not
- Guarantee that a notice reaches you or makes a sound. iOS settings, Focus, the Silent switch and battery management decide.
- Keep working after you force-quit it, or if iOS stops it. Pending reminders may still appear, without new location data.
- Know which vehicle you are on, whether it stops at your station, or whether its doors open.
- Decide that you got off. Only you can confirm that.
- Provide real-time transit data. ARRILERT 1.0 contains no timetable or operator feed.
- Replace staff, announcements or emergency services.
Delete your data
Everything ARRILERT stores stays on your iPhone. There is no account and no ARRILERT server, so there is nothing about you for us to delete.
- One journey: Journey history → open the journey → Delete in its Evidence Ledger.
- All journeys: Settings & privacy → Delete all journey history.
- How long journeys are kept: Settings & privacy → Journey history: Delete when the journey ends, Keep 1 day, Keep 7 days (the default) or Keep 30 days.
- Recent destinations: Settings & privacy → Clear recent destinations.
- The journey in progress: ending it (End journey or I got off) deletes its recent locations. Finished journeys never keep positions.
- Everything: deleting the app removes all its data from your iPhone.
To stop location access, choose Settings & privacy → Open iOS Settings, then Location. The Rehearsal Lab works without it. Details are in the privacy policy.
Questions
Does ARRILERT have timetables or live departures?
No. ARRILERT 1.0 contains no timetable, real-time or operator data. In real journeys, route checks use only the checkpoints you place, and place search uses Apple Maps: results are places, not verified transit routes.
Will it wake me if my iPhone is on silent?
Not necessarily. Notices follow your iOS notification, Focus and Silent settings, and Time Sensitive notices don't override the Silent switch. ARRILERT is not a guaranteed alarm: run the Alert Readiness Check before relying on it.
Does ARRILERT know when I've got off?
No. It can see that you seem to be at your stop, but only you can confirm that you got off — tap I got off.
Does it work underground?
GPS is often unavailable in tunnels and underground stations. ARRILERT then shows that its estimate is uncertain rather than inventing precision. Rehearsal scenario 4 shows what this looks like.
Do I need a data connection?
Searching for a place and opening Apple Maps need one. Dropping a pin, the Rehearsal Lab and ARRILERT's own decisions during a journey work on your iPhone.
What do I need?
An iPhone with iOS 18 or later. ARRILERT is in English and French and follows your iPhone's language; to change it for ARRILERT only, use Settings & privacy → Change language in iOS Settings.
Is there an account?
No. There is no sign-in, no account and nothing to sync.
Which accessibility features does ARRILERT support?
Dynamic Type, VoiceOver, Increase Contrast, dark mode and Reduce Motion (the Assurance Ring stops pulsing). Status is always shown with text and symbols, never colour alone. VoiceOver can also announce stage changes: Settings & privacy → Accessibility.
